Brushmaking Road Trip to North Carolina

Ah, Appalachia in the autumn!

A great time to visit. And it’s been too long.

So, it is with great pleasure that I invite you to join me for one of two North Carolina brushmaking workshops now accepting registration:

Penland School of Craft is located in the mountains of western North Carolina near Spruce Pine and the Pisgah National Forest. I will be returning to Penland to teach my third brushmaking workshop there. This time it will be a 3-day weekend intensive workshop, Friday, October 21 - Sunday, October 23.

The workshop is called Making Your Mark: A Brushmaking Intensive and will cover both basic and advanced techniques in brushmaking with opportunity to test different fibers and brush types.

Penland is a hospitable venue with a deep heritage and commitment to providing guests with unforgettable retreats. I highly recommend it, especially if you’ve never visited.

I have a map, links and a few other photos on my website’s Event Page here.

My friend Stan Simmons (whom I met at not one, but two of my brushmaking workshops!) has invited me to offer a regular 1-day workshop in his studio in Fayetteville a couple days later on Tuesday, October 25. Fayetteville is in the Sandhills of NC, east of Charlotte and south of Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill. Stan is an experienced workshop host and a guy who is very approachable and easy to work with.

A North Carolina bonus: both locations offer bamboo stands where I will discuss how to choose and harvest materials for brush handles.

As always, I will have a variety of brush fibers for brushmakers to experiment with. Handmade brushes offer a substantially more personalized experience than using mass-manufactured brushes.

If you’re interested in brushmaking and/or a road trip to beautiful North Carolina, please join me. I look forward to meeting you there!
